The School of Nursing.
The School of Nursing was granted full recognition by the National Council of Nurses and Midwives after an inspection on 15 th August 1980. The school continues to grow and at present has 302 students. Of these, 160 are straight course students and 22 midwives doing an 18-month course sponsored by Iyi Enu hospital. The Government sponsors 25 straight course student and 71midwives. The remaining 24 student are sponsored by other hospital or firms, or are privately sponsored. Of the teaching staff of nine, six are paid by Iyi Enu hospital, one is seconded by the Government and two are N. Y. S. C. member. In May 1980, 21 out of 31 candidates qualified and in November 1980 the successful ones were 27 out of 34. We are under continual pressure to increase our number in the school of nursing, but we have to beware of thinking of numbers only. With too large a number adequate supervision and experience is difficult, and standards tend to fall. The problem of accommodation both in Iyi Enu hospital, and for Orthopaedic and psychiatric courses in Enugu become acute.
